Pittsburgh will trade a conditional 7th round pick in exchange for the talented winger. Kovalev, who is celebrating his 38th birthday today, also had to waive his no-trade clause to re-join the injury ridden Pens.
(He despises Ottawa. What a birthday present.)
Kovalev has 14 goals and 13 assists for 27 points. I could only imagine he will first line with Staal and Neal until Pittsburgh starts to get some players back. Overall a great trade for Shero and the Penguins.
In other trade related news, the Tampa Bay Lightning traded backup goalie Dan Ellis to Anaheim in exchange for Ducks backup Curtis McElhinney.
Ellis should start for the Ducks while All-Star goalie Jonas Hiller is out with vertigo. Ellis lost his previous starting job when the Lightning acquired goalie Dwayne Roloson.
In addition, Atlanta traded center Ben Maxwell and a 2011 4th round pick to Montreal in exchange for forward Nigel Dawes and defenseman Brent Sopel. Overall this is a fairly meaningless trade.
You can check out the rest of the deals to go down here.
Kovalev is a beast for sure.
