Unusual Happenings in the NHL: 2/2 Edition

A distinct pair of unique happenings took place February second in the NHL, one an offensive feat and the other... well I guess it was defensive...

Make the Jump.

For the first time in 1,139 days, an NHL player has scored 5 goals in just one game. That man was Johan Franzen of the Detroit Red Wings. Franzen scored a whopping 5 goals in a 7-5 win over the Ottawa Senators. Only 44 players have scored 5 goals since 1917.

In even bigger news, Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Brent Johnson and New York Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro fought. That was DiPietro's second career fight. The scrap occured with 16 seconds left in the 3-0 Pittsburgh win, and though Johnson clearly won the fight, the ensuing penalty robbed him of his shutout. When asked if it was worth the lost shutout, Johnson replied, "Definitly."

Looks about right...

The fight ended nearly as quick as it began with Johnson crushing DiPietro with a huge left.

Here's the video.

Best YouTube comment on this: Taylor Gang or get punched in the face by Brent Johnson.

Good lord what a punch... meanwhile in Russia...

Nabokov you cheeky bastard.

In addition, if anyone was wondering goalies do wear their masks all the time.

Shoutout to Kunk-dog. What a human.
